1185 new cases in Victoria, seven deaths; US diplomatic boycott of Beijing Winter Olympics; Teachers, transport workers strike in NSW; Shark attack off Victorian beach; NSW records 260 total new cases

Queensland Annastacia Palaszczuk cannot not guarantee she will not snap shut her state’s border again, if necessary.

After 251 days of hard border closures, Queensland will reopen to interstate COVID-19 hotspots from next Monday.

When asked if this was the end of border closures, Ms Palaszczuk said: “We hope so.”

The arrival of thousands of travellers will inevitably bring coronavirus, and potentially Omicron, into Queensland, Ms Palaszczuk said.

“It will be really different for Queenslanders because we are used to hearing donut days,” she said, referring to zero cases.

“We are going to see cases.”
