The boy scaled their backyard fence and was found unconscious in a neighbour’s pool in the suburb of Para Hills West at about 6.30pm yesterday.
“I don’t know how my son died. I just found him in the pool and I tried to save his life,” his father Deng Garang said.
Neighbours found the boy unconscious and paramedics performed CPR but Ajok couldn’t be saved.
His cousin Biar Garang described the boy as “a very lovely, humble and caring kid”.
Mr Garang said he and his son Ajok were “inseparable”.
“When I come home from work in the morning, I’ve got him waiting for me at the door,” his father said.
“At 6am, he’s the one who opens the door for me.
“We used to be connected. He’s my friend, we share one bed, we eat in the same dish.”
The family is now questioning how this happened, as the fence is several metres high.
“He has a swimming lesson every Wednesday, we go to Maddison Park School,” his cousin said.
Floral tributes have been laid outside the family home, as the community remains in shock after last night’s tragedy.
“I don’t know what to say, maybe God will reward me for my loss,” Mr Garang said.
A report will now be prepared for the coroner.
