Body recovered from sea off Lancelin believed to be missing free diver

A body has been recovered from the ocean off Lancelin on Sunday after being found by a recreational diver at the weekend.

It is believed the remains belong to missing free diver Matthew Phillips, who disappeared a month ago from the area while likely diving for crayfish.

The 49-year-old was last seen driving his vehicle around 2pm on November 8.

The next morning police found his car in a Lancelin beach carpark with his wetsuit and snorkelling gear missing.

An extensive search of the area failed to find any trace of the experienced diver and fisherman and was called off after four days.

A WA Police spokeswoman said Mr Phillips’ family, including his two daughters, had been notified of the discovery of the remains.

“Forensic examinations will be undertaken to identify the person which may take several days,” she said.

“Police will prepare a report for the coroner.”
