Creator, former Daily Press reporter to signal new guide about Newport News Shipbuilding and its staff – Daily Press

The writer of a brand new guide about Newport News Shipbuilding staff will signal copies of the guide at two native Barnes & Noble shops Saturday.

Michael Fabey wrote “Heavy Metal: The Hard Days and Nights of the Shipyard Workers Who Build America’s Supercarriers,” printed by HarperCollins.

Fabey, 59, of Spotsylvania County, lined Newport News Shipbuilding and the protection business for the Daily Press from 2000-04. He’s at the moment the U.S. editor for Jane’s Fighting Ships, primarily based within the United Kingdom.

The guide tells the story of shipyard staff — from welders to electricians to machinists to many different trades — as they construct plane carriers on the Newport News yard.

“Heavy Metal puts us on the waterfront and into the lives of these men and women as they battle layoffs, the elements, impossible deadlines, extraordinary pressure, workplace dangers, and a pandemic to complete a ship that will be essential to protect America’s way of life,” in line with the guide’s jacket.

The first guide signing will probably be from 1 p.m. to three p.m. on the Barnes & Noble at 12170 Jefferson Ave. in Newport News. The second will run from 4 p.m. to six p.m. on the Barnes & Noble at Peninsula Town Center, 5100 Kilgore Ave. in Hampton.
