Five-year-old boy fighting for life after being mauled by dog on Gold Coast

A five-year-old boy is fighting for life in a Queensland hospital after being attacked by a dog.

The boy’s family had been house sitting a property in Varsity Lakes on the Gold Coast when the owner’s dog attacked him around midday on Christmas Eve, mauling the young child’s back and neck.

He sustained life-threatening bites before going into cardiac arrest.

The boy’s grandmother leapt into action, trying to pull the bull terrier cross american bulldog off the boy.

The grandmother is also in hospital but in a stable condition.

The boy was transported to Gold Coast University Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery.

He remains there in a critical condition tonight.

Queensland Ambulance Service’s Paul Young said multiple paramedics, including the aigh acuity response unit, attended the scene.

“They were house sitting a house, so it’s not their dog and they were playing in the backyard and apparently the dog has just turned,” Mr Young said.
