NSW records 6324 COVID-19 cases, three deaths, 521 in hospital; Victoria records 1999 new COVID-19 cases, three deaths; Sydney lab apologises over 400 wrong results, Lengthy waits continue as state flags use of rapid tests, Bushfire warnings in WA; Testing crisis continues as lines build before opening

An infectious diseases expert called Sydney’s COVID-19 results blunder “very unfortunate” but said it reflects how “stressed” the system is.

Dr Sanjaya Senanayak said the emergence of the Omicron variant means Australia might have to adjust how it deals with COVID-19.

“If you asked me about a month ago, before Omicron I would have said, look, test, trace, isolate still works well,” he told Today.

“With Omicron, it is very difficult.

“We had 6500 cases yesterday in NSW.

“That means we’ve got about 60 to 120,000 contacts to trace within 48 hours.
