Sid Schwab is trying to warn the complacent

My favorite day to read The Herald is Friday, because I get to read Sid Schwab. The July 29 issue also included a letter from a ruffled reader who applied the term “domestic terrorist” to the best columnist The Herald offers. My definition of domestic terrorism would include the insurrectionists who stormed the Capitol, as well as those who stoked that fire and continue to campaign on the Big Lie. If those are not domestic terrorists, who is?

The Red Wave terrifies me in that it would bring with it subjection of women’s bodies to government interference; the increasing disparity between the obscenely wealthy and the rest of us; the acceptance of unabashed hostility to our LBGTQ citizens, not to mention people of color; the normalization of mass shootings; and the ominous threat to democracy itself, in the form of total control — by one party — of elections in the future. not only sounds the alarm on these issues, but provides sources, for those who like to fact-check, like me.

I am flabbergasted that the likes of Gaetz, Greene, Gosar, et. al, have been put into any position of authority, not to mention some of the current candidates like Herschel Walker, J.D. Vance, and Mehmet Oz. How can these people be on the ballot? What has happened to us? Oh, yeah, the worst of them all, and his influence on a third of the population, who still labor under the delusion that he won the election, despite no evidence of this whatsoever. The brainwashing of these folks is the scariest thing of all.

Too many of us who believe in democracy have fallen into complacency; it’s easy to lose hope. We should never stop calling out crazy when we see it. Schwab delivers the clarion call that aims to shake us awake with hard truth. We need that voice. Thank you, Sid!
