US to ship prime regional diplomat Kurt Campbell, says media report

America’s prime diplomat for the Indo-Pacific will head to the Solomon Islands, weeks after it emerged the South Pacific island nation will signal a deal that provides China rights to ship its navy there.

Kurt Campbell, who serves because the National Security Council Coordinator for the Indo-Pacific, will journey to the island nation, the Financial Times has reported.

The Solomon Islands have agreed to a safety take care of Beijing that can permit China to take its first main diplomatic stake within the Pacific.

The deal, first flagged final month, comes after the Solomon Islands rejected days of lobbying from Australia and New Zealand to rethink signing it.
