WEST COAST LEAGUE: Kamloops wins weekend series against Lefties


KAMLOOPS — Port Angeles outhit Kamloops on Sunday afternoon, but walks, a couple of untimely errors, stolen bases and wild pitches hurt the Lefties as the NorthPaws took a three-game series with a 7-4 win over the Lefties.

The Lefties outhit the NorthPaws 9-7, but gave up nine walks and five stolen bases. A pair of wild pitches also hurt them in a three-run inning.

Andres Quinones (Cal State, San Bernardino) started and took the loss. He went four innings, allowed six hits and three earned runs. He walked two.

The NorthPaws took two games out of three in the weekend series.

BY Choi (New Mexico Military Institute) drove in two runs with an RBI single and a solo home run for the Lefties. Weston Peninger (Howard College) had a double, two hits and a run scored. Former Port Angeles Roughrider Ethan Flodstrom (Tacoma College) had a hit and an RBI sacrifice fly, while Riley Parker (Cal State, San Bernardino) had two hits, a walk and a run scored.

Port Angeles (9-14 in West Coast League, 11-15 overall) makes a long road trip back to Civic Field to play at 6:35 p.m. today against another new West Coast League team, the Nanaimo NightOwls (9-10), making their first trip to the Olympic Peninsula.

Friday, Saturday games

The Lefties split their first two games against Kamloops, losing 6-5 Friday in 10 innings and coming back to win 3-2 Saturday night.

Kemet Brown (Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo) had a go-ahead two-run hit in the top of the ninth inning to give the Lefties a 3-2 lead. The Lefties turned a double play with two men on base and one out to end the game in the bottom of the ninth, preserving the win.

Mason Persons (Edmonds Community College) gave the Lefties a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the third inning. The NorthPaws were able to score a run in the fifth and another in the eighth to take a lead into the ninth inning.

In the ninth, Trey Maeker (Fordham) began a rally with a one-out walk and Peninger followed with a double to put runners at second and third. Brown then hit a clutch single to drive in Maeker and Peninger.

The bottom of the ninth got tense for the Lefties. Pitcher Liam Paddack (Spokane Falls Community College) began the inning by hitting the NorthPaws’ first two batters, putting the go-ahead run on base with no outs. But he was able to get Kamloops’ Jackson Forbes to fly out and got Robin Villenueve to hit a grounder to shortstop Parker. Parker, second baseman Persons and first baseman Peninger turned a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

Paddack pitched two scoreless innings to earn the victory. He struck out three while allowing two hits. Zane Petty (Texas Tech) started the game, going 4⅓ innings, allowing four hits and one earned run. He struck out five. Dillon Dibrell (Northern Oklahoma) pitched 2⅓ innings, allowing one hit, one run and two walks. He struck out three.

The Lefties got off to a great start Friday night against the NorthPaws, jumping out to a 5-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but they couldn’t push across another run for the rest of the game.

The Lefties got their five runs with the benefit of just two hits. Port Angeles had three walks and Kamloops made four errors in the first inning to help the Lefties’ cause.

After that sloppy inning, Kamloops pitchers and fielders settled down. Four pitchers allowed just three hits and three walks for the rest of the game and the NorthPaws avoided making any more errors.

Kamloops scored two runs in the bottom of the first and three more in the third to tie the game. Lefties pitchers did well afterward, keeping the NorthPaws scoreless from the fourth through the ninth innings.

Finally in the 10th, Kamloops broke through with a two-out double followed by an RBI single to end the game.

Hunter Kirkpatrick (San Diego CC) started the game, going three innings and giving up four earned runs. Ryan Orr (Washington State) pitched great, going three innings and allowing one hit, two walks and no runs. He struck out five. Maeker went 1⅔ innings, allowing a hit, a walk and no earned runs. He struck out two.

Andrew Monson (Spokane Falls) took the loss, pitching 1⅔ innings and giving up the two hits in the 10th.

At the plate, Flodstrom got on base five times with a hit, three walks and being hit by a pitch. He also scored a run. Will Mulflur (Iowa) had an RBI single and Peninger had a hit and a run scored.
