What Seahawks’ reported extension with DT Bryan Mone means

The Seahawks have reportedly agreed to an extension with a key player, though it’s not the one many have been watching closely in hope of with DK Metcalf.

Inside the numbers of potential Hawks-DK Metcalf extension

Seattle will sign defensive tackle Bryan Mone to a two-year, $12 million contract, according to ESPN Seahawks reporter Brady Henderson. Per Henderson, the 26-year old Mone will now be under contract with Seattle through the 2024 season, and he could earn as much as $13.8 million over the remainder of the deal through incentives.

On the debut edition of Seattle Sports’ Bump and Stacy on Monday morning, former Seahawks wide receiver Michael Bumpus shared what the news of Mone’s new deal signals, especially as the Hawks transition both to a new defensive coordinator in Clint Hurtt and a 3-4 defensive front from a 4-3.

“They did the same thing with Poona Ford,” Bump said, referencing another Seahawks defensive tackle who was signed to a similar two-year extension last offseason. “If Clint Hurtt wants this guy – he’s a defensive lineman-type guy as the new defensive coordinator – if he feels (Mone) fits what they want him to do, go ahead and do that.”

The 6-foot-3, 345-pound Mone was an undrafted free agent out of Michigan in 2019, but he’s played his way into an important role in Seattle’s defense. He appeared in 14 games and started five in 2021 for the Seahawks, registering 35 combined tackles, 1.5 sacks, three QB hits, a pass defensed and a forced fumble.

While Mone plays a position that doesn’t jump out much on the stat sheet, Bumpus says the reported extension speaks volumes about his importance for Hurrt and the Hawks’ defense.

“D-tackle is not a glamorous position. You’re not going to hear about these guys. He takes on double teams, does the dirty work. I’m happy for him. If he fits what they’re doing, then go ahead and get it done.”

You can listen to Bump and Stacy live Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Seattle Sports. Find podcasts of each edition of the show, which features Bumpus and co-host Stacy Rost, at this link at 3 p.m. each day.
